About

Tong Sha is a climate and atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on aerosol transport, dust modeling, and the evaluation of Earth system simulations. Her work is critical to understanding how mineral dust and other aerosols affect regional climate and air quality, particularly over North Africa and East Asia. In her highly cited 2020 study, Sha applied the WRF-Chem model to evaluate dust extinction and vertical profiles over North Africa, comparing simulations from three different dust schemes—GOCART, AFWA, and UoC—against satellite observations from CALIPSO and ground-based AERONET data. This work, with 30 citations, provided key insights into the strengths and limitations of current dust modeling approaches. She also contributed to the assessment of aerosol burden and optical depth in CMIP5 simulations over East Asia, a study that has garnered 14 citations and helped improve the representation of aerosols in global climate models. Through these contributions, Tong Sha has advanced our understanding of aerosol-climate interactions and the fidelity of models used to predict their impacts.
