About
Tomonari Motonaga is a leading urologic surgeon whose research centers on optimizing surgical outcomes in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and radical cystectomy. His work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of how to balance cancer control with functional preservation. In a landmark 2023 study (24 citations), Motonaga compared pentafecta outcomes—a composite measure of continence, potency, cancer control, surgical margins, and complication avoidance—between nerve-sparing and non-nerve-sparing RARP, providing crucial evidence for personalized surgical decision-making. He has also pioneered the application of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols in frail patients undergoing intracorporeal urinary diversion, demonstrating that these protocols can reduce postoperative ileus and improve bowel recovery even in vulnerable populations.
