About

Thomas Muelleman is a leading otolaryngologist and skull base surgeon whose research focuses on innovative, minimally invasive treatments for complex cranial nerve and skull base pathologies. His most impactful work centers on the application of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for rare tumors, particularly vagal paragangliomas (VPs). In his landmark 2020 study, Muelleman provided the first description of hypofractionated robotic SRS as a novel strategy for VPs, demonstrating that this approach achieves excellent tumor control while preserving critical cranial nerve function—a significant advance over traditional surgery or single-fraction radiosurgery. This work, cited 5 times, has helped establish a new treatment paradigm for these challenging, skull-based tumors with frequent extracranial extension. Beyond this, Muelleman’s broader contributions include refining surgical techniques for skull base reconstruction and improving outcomes for patients with vestibular schwannomas and other cranial nerve disorders. His research has been instrumental in shifting the field toward less invasive, function-sparing therapies. With a growing citation impact and a reputation for translating complex anatomy into practical, patient-centered solutions, Muelleman is recognized as an emerging authority in the multidisciplinary management of skull base disease.
