About
Thomas Fogarty is a pioneering figure in interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery, best known for inventing the Fogarty balloon catheter—a device that revolutionized the treatment of blood clots and vascular disease. His research spans minimally invasive surgical techniques, cardiac ablation, and the intersection of radiation therapy with cardiology. Fogarty’s most cited work, “Noninvasive stereotactic radiosurgery (CyberHeart) for creation of ablation lesions in the atrium” (2010, 174 citations), introduced a groundbreaking approach to treating atrial fibrillation by using focused radiation to ablate cardiac tissue without incisions. This concept, building on earlier feasibility studies like his 2007 abstract on non-invasive pulmonary vein ablation, demonstrated the potential of stereotactic radiosurgery for cardiac applications. With over 150 patents and numerous awards, including the National Medal of Technology, Fogarty’s contributions have fundamentally altered vascular surgery and non-invasive cardiac care. His work continues to inspire innovations in hybrid therapies that combine imaging, robotics, and radiation to treat complex cardiovascular conditions, making him a transformative figure in modern medicine.
