About
Tammy Franklin is a leading urologic oncologist whose research is reshaping the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer. Her work centers on improving the accuracy of imaging to guide clinical decision-making, particularly by comparing the performance of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PSMA PET/CT). In her landmark 2021 study, “Findings in 1,123 Men with Preoperative ⁶⁸Ga-PSMA PET/CT and mpMRI Compared to Totally Embedded Radical Prostatectomy Histopathology,” Franklin demonstrated that mpMRI alone fails to detect a significant subset of clinically important prostate cancers. By directly correlating preoperative scans with whole-mount histopathology from over 1,100 patients, she provided compelling evidence that PSMA PET/CT offers additional diagnostic value beyond mpMRI, particularly for identifying aggressive disease. This work, cited over 30 times, has profound implications for how clinicians stage prostate cancer and select patients for surgery or active surveillance. Franklin’s research is helping to establish a new standard for multimodal imaging in prostate cancer management, directly impacting patient outcomes.
