About
T. Ghidini is a leading figure in space manufacturing and materials science, driving the European Space Agency’s (ESA) vision for off-world production. Their research centers on additive manufacturing (3D printing) for large-scale space structures, in-space manufacturing, and advanced welding techniques for extreme environments. A standout contribution is their pioneering work on a novel local shielding approach for laser welding-based additive manufacturing of titanium components, directly supporting the construction of the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA) optical bench—a mission tackling one of ESA’s top scientific priorities. Ghidini’s 2022 overview, “Towards out of earth manufacturing,” has garnered 60 citations, cementing their role in shaping ESA’s Materials and Processes roadmap. By bridging terrestrial fabrication limits with the demands of orbital infrastructure, Ghidini is enabling humanity’s next leap: building beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Their work not only advances ATHENA’s ambitious goals but also lays the groundwork for sustainable lunar and Martian habitats, making them a pivotal voice in the future of space exploration.
