About

Stephan Jacobs is a pioneering figure in the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, with a career-long focus on robotic-assisted and endoscopic coronary revascularization. His landmark 2000 paper, "Total endoscopic off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting," with 75 citations, documented the first two cases of totally endoscopic off-pump coronary artery bypass (TECAB) using the da Vinci telemanipulation system, establishing a foundational technique that has influenced a generation of cardiac surgeons. Jacobs further advanced the field by developing novel technologies, including a magnetic coupling device for facilitated endoscopic beating-heart bypass (40 citations) and distal anastomotic devices, demonstrating his commitment to reducing surgical trauma and improving patient recovery. His comprehensive 2021 review on minimally invasive coronary revascularization (40 citations) has become a key reference for surgeons and trainees. More recently, his 2025 systematic review on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) for minimally invasive valve surgery (10 citations) shows his continued leadership in refining perioperative care. With over 200 total citations, Jacobs’ work at the Leipzig Heart Center has been instrumental in transforming coronary artery bypass grafting from a highly invasive procedure into a precise, robotically-assisted intervention, directly impacting clinical practice and patient outcomes.
