About
Stefano Di Lernia is a pioneering surgeon whose work has significantly advanced the field of minimally invasive oncologic surgery, with a particular focus on gastric and adrenal malignancies. His major contributions center on refining and validating laparoscopic and robot-assisted gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection for distal gastric adenocarcinoma. His landmark 2010 study, cited 139 times, demonstrated that subtotal gastrectomy with D2 dissection via minimally invasive approaches yields excellent long-term outcomes, including robust 5-year survival rates, challenging the traditional dominance of open surgery. Di Lernia further extended this work by systematically comparing conventional laparoscopic and robot-assisted techniques, showing both to be safe and effective for gastric cancer, with his 2008 series of 65 patients accumulating 67 citations. His clinical experience also encompasses adrenal surgery, as evidenced by his 2007 report on 68 laparoscopic adrenalectomies.
