About

Simon C. Gandevia is a world-renowned neuroscientist whose research has fundamentally shaped our understanding of human motor control, respiratory physiology, and the neural mechanisms of muscle function. His key contributions span the neurophysiology of breathing, the sense of effort and fatigue, and the cortical control of movement. Gandevia is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on the perception of muscle force and the role of central motor commands in generating the sensation of effort, demonstrating that our sense of strength is not solely derived from peripheral feedback but from a "sense of effort" originating in the brain. His highly cited work, including the recent "Consensus for experimental design in electromyography (CEDE) project," provides critical guidelines for using EMG to estimate muscle force, a cornerstone for biomechanics and rehabilitation. With over 30,000 citations and an h-index exceeding 90, Gandevia’s impact is immense.
