Shinichiro Okada is a pioneering thoracic surgeon whose work helped lay the foundation for robotic-assisted minimally invasive lung surgery. Okada’s most notable contributions came in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when he demonstrated the feasibility of performing complex thoracoscopic procedures—such as lobectomy for primary lung cancer—using a voice-controlled robotic arm and an instrument retraction system.
