About
S Ishimori is a pioneering thoracic surgeon whose research has centered on advancing minimally invasive lung surgery through robotic assistance. His most significant contribution lies in demonstrating the feasibility and safety of thoracoscopic major lung resection for primary lung cancer performed by a single surgeon using a voice-controlled robot (the AESOP system) and an innovative instrument retraction system. This work, detailed in his 2000 paper (20 citations), addressed a critical challenge in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)—the need for an additional surgeon to hold the camera—by enabling solo-surgeon procedures. Ishimori’s subsequent studies extended this approach to high-risk patients, including those with cardiopulmonary dysfunction and elderly individuals aged 80 or older, showing that robotic assistance could expand access to minimally invasive resection. He also applied the voice-controlled robot to treat a solitary pulmonary arteriovenous malformation, further broadening the technology’s utility.
