About

Sergio Garrido-Jurado is a leading figure in computer vision, best known for his pioneering work on fiducial marker systems. His research focuses on developing robust, highly reliable visual markers for augmented reality, robotics, and camera pose estimation. Garrido-Jurado’s landmark 2014 paper, "Automatic generation and detection of highly reliable fiducial markers under occlusion," has accumulated over 2,500 citations, establishing the ArUco library as a de facto standard in the field. This work introduced a dictionary-based marker generation method that dramatically improved detection under partial occlusion and challenging lighting conditions. His subsequent research, including "Robust identification of fiducial markers in challenging conditions" (52 citations) and the comprehensive "Planar fiducial markers: a comparative study" (28 citations), further refined marker robustness and provided critical benchmarks for the community. Garrido-Jurado’s contributions have enabled widespread adoption of fiducial markers in applications from drone landing to surgical navigation, making complex spatial tracking accessible to researchers and developers worldwide. His work remains essential reading for anyone building vision-based localization systems.
