About
Seishin Takao is a leading figure in the advancement of proton therapy for pediatric and young adult central nervous system (CNS) tumors. His research centers on the clinical application and technical refinement of intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT), particularly for challenging craniospinal irradiation. Takao’s major contribution is the development and validation of a novel craniospinal IMPT system that integrates gantry-mounted orthogonal X-ray imagers with a robotic six-degrees-of-freedom patient table. This innovation, detailed in his highly cited 2019 work (10 citations), dramatically improves the precision of large-field treatments for medulloblastomas and germ cell tumors. By enabling more accurate patient positioning and dose delivery, his work directly addresses the critical need to spare healthy tissue in developing patients, reducing long-term side effects. This technical achievement represents a significant step forward in making proton therapy safer and more effective for children, adolescents, and young adults battling CNS malignancies, establishing Takao as a key innovator in the field.
