About

Shinichi Shimizu is a leading figure in precision radiation oncology, specializing in proton therapy and stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR). His major contributions center on developing advanced delivery techniques that maximize tumor control while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. In a landmark 2019 study, Shimizu pioneered intensity-modulated spot-scanning proton therapy for craniospinal irradiation (ipCSI) in children and young adults with central nervous system tumors. By integrating robotic patient positioning with online X-ray imaging, his system achieved highly conformal dose distributions, significantly reducing radiation exposure to critical organs. This work, cited 10 times, has set a new standard for treating medulloblastomas and germ cell tumors in pediatric populations. More recently, Shimizu has advanced SABR for metastatic lung tumors using the CyberKnife platform. His 2023 study demonstrated that delivering a central high dose via hundreds of robotic beam angles creates steep dose gradients, enabling potent tumor ablation while sparing surrounding lung tissue. With 7 citations, this work underscores his commitment to pushing the boundaries of dose escalation. Shimizu’s research bridges engineering innovation and clinical application, offering safer, more effective treatments for some of the most challenging cancers.
