Sanjeev Dutta is a pioneering figure in pediatric minimal access surgery and surgical robotics, whose work has fundamentally shaped how complex procedures are performed in children. His research spans three interconnected domains: the comparative effectiveness of laparoscopic versus robotic techniques, the feasibility of remote telepresence surgery, and the integration of advanced imaging into surgical oncology. Dutta’s landmark 2010 study comparing laparoscopic and robotic suturing performance (231 citations) provided critical evidence on skill acquisition and task efficiency for both experts and novices. His groundbreaking 2005 investigation into the impact of latency on remote surgery (113 citations) challenged the prevailing assumption that delays beyond 300 ms made telepresence surgery impossible, demonstrating that precise tasks could still be completed with acceptable error rates. Dutta has also advanced the field through his work on minimal access portoenterostomy for biliary atresia (75 citations) and, most recently, led the first-in-human evaluation of a prostate-specific membrane antigen–targeted near-infrared fluorescent molecule for intraoperative identification of prostate cancer (2023, 35 citations).
