Sagar Patel is a leading surgical anatomist whose work has fundamentally reshaped the safety protocols for transoral robotic surgery (TORS). His primary research focuses on head and neck surgical anatomy, with a particular emphasis on the critical neurovascular structures of the base of tongue (BOT). Patel’s landmark 2016 study, “Establishing a danger zone: An anatomic study of the lingual artery in base of tongue surgery,” has garnered 31 citations and remains a cornerstone reference in the field. In this work, he meticulously mapped the hypoglossal/lingual artery neurovascular bundle (HLNVB) relative to constant surface landmarks, demonstrating how surgical retraction alters these relationships.
