Ronald M. Shymko’s research has significantly advanced our understanding of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system, a critical axis in growth, metabolism, and disease. His work has focused on the molecular interactions that regulate IGF bioavailability, particularly the binding of IGFs to their binding proteins. Shymko’s most cited paper, “Biosensor Measurement of the Binding of Insulin-like Growth Factors I and II and Their Analogues to the Insulin-like Growth Factor-binding Protein-3” (1996, 65 citations), pioneered the use of biosensor technology to precisely quantify these interactions. This study resolved longstanding discrepancies in reported affinities by providing accurate dissociation constants (Kd values between 0.03 and 0.5 nM) for IGF-I and IGF-II binding to IGFBP-3.
