Raja Kandaswamy is a pioneering transplant surgeon whose research has fundamentally advanced the fields of living donor nephrectomy, pancreatic surgery, and islet cell transplantation. His work is distinguished by a relentless drive to minimize surgical invasiveness while maximizing donor and recipient outcomes. A landmark contribution is his comprehensive, single-center study on the "Evolution of Living Donor Nephrectomy," which meticulously analyzed over five decades of practice (1963-2014) at the University of Minnesota. This highly cited work (59 citations) provided critical, long-term data on the safety and evolution of surgical techniques, from open to laparoscopic approaches, establishing benchmarks for donor care worldwide.
