About

Richard S. J. Frackowiak is a pioneering figure in human brain mapping and computational neuroscience, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of brain structure, function, and disease. As a co-founder of the field of neuroimaging, he developed early methods for positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), enabling non-invasive visualization of neural activity. His landmark contributions include establishing statistical parametric mapping (SPM) as the gold standard for analyzing brain imaging data, a tool now used worldwide. With over 163 citations on his seminal 2011 paper "Introducing the Human Brain Project," Frackowiak played a key role in launching this major European Union Flagship initiative, which aims to simulate the human brain on supercomputers.
