Robert Costanza is a pioneering ecological economist whose work has fundamentally reshaped how we understand the relationship between natural ecosystems and human well-being. His key research areas include ecosystem services valuation, sustainability science, and the development of integrated ecological-economic models. Costanza is best known for his landmark 1997 paper in *Nature*, which estimated the global value of ecosystem services at an average of $33 trillion per year—a figure that, at the time, exceeded the entire world’s GDP. This work, which has accumulated over 20,000 citations, sparked a paradigm shift in environmental policy and conservation. He also co-founded the field of ecological economics and served as editor-in-chief of the journal *Ecological Economics*. Among his many honors, Costanza received the Kenneth E. Boulding Memorial Award and was named an ISI Highly Cited Researcher. His research continues to influence global initiatives, including the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
