About
R. Commane is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the remote atmosphere, aerosol properties, and greenhouse gas fluxes. A key contributor to the NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom), Commane led global-scale in situ measurements of aerosol microphysical, chemical, and optical properties aboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft, which flew from ~84°N to ~86°S over the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, and Southern oceans. This work, published in 2021 and accumulating over 70 citations, provides a foundational dataset for understanding aerosol behavior in pristine environments and their role in climate. Commane’s research also extends to carbon cycle science, including methane and carbon dioxide emissions from Arctic ecosystems, using airborne and surface observations to constrain regional budgets. Their contributions have advanced knowledge of how remote aerosols influence Earth’s radiative balance and how high-latitude regions respond to climate change.
