Qiuwen Fang is a pioneering researcher in the field of cell therapy for neuromuscular disorders, with a primary focus on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). His landmark work in the early 1990s established the foundational framework for myoblast transfer therapy (MTT) as a potential treatment for this devastating genetic disease. In a seminal 1992 study (106 citations), Fang demonstrated the feasibility and safety of injecting five billion normal myoblasts into the lower limbs of 21 DMD boys aged 6–14, marking one of the first large-scale Phase II trials of its kind. He expanded this work in a 1993 study (86 citations), treating 32 boys—half of whom were nonambulatory—with an experimental lower body treatment involving 48 injections. These contributions were among the earliest systematic attempts to use cell transplantation to restore dystrophin expression and muscle function in DMD patients. Fang’s rigorous assessment of safety, efficacy, and procedural feasibility helped lay the groundwork for subsequent gene and cell-based therapies.
