About

Piet Hoebeke is a pioneering pediatric urologist whose research has fundamentally advanced minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery for children. His work centers on developing and validating robotic techniques for complex congenital and oncologic conditions, dramatically expanding the boundaries of what is possible in pediatric urology. Hoebeke’s landmark contribution is the first global, multi-institutional study on minimally invasive pyeloplasty in children (109 citations), which established safety and efficacy benchmarks for this procedure worldwide. He has also pioneered robot-assisted kidney autotransplantation (56 citations), offering a minimally invasive salvage option for damaged kidneys, and demonstrated the feasibility of robotic resection for ectopic kidneys and Wilms’ tumor in children. His research further explores rare robotic indications, including surgery for ectopic organs and differences of sexual development. Through his leadership in the European Association of Urology’s Young Academic Urologists working party, Hoebeke has shaped international guidelines and trained a new generation of surgeons.
