Peter Bowman is a biomechanics researcher focused on mitigating the mechanical drivers of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) through personalized gait interventions. His work centers on understanding how subtle modifications to walking patterns—such as foot progression angle, step width, and functional electrical stimulation (FES)—can reduce the peak knee adduction moment (pKAM), a key biomarker of medial compartment loading. Bowman’s pioneering pilot study on FES of the lateral knee muscles demonstrated that targeted muscle activation can lower pKAM during stepping, offering a novel, non-invasive approach to offloading the arthritic knee. He has also developed methods to determine individualized foot progression angles and step widths that minimize joint loading without inducing unnatural gait, addressing a critical gap in clinical rehabilitation.
