Paul J. Choi is a pioneering researcher whose work bridges the future of surgical robotics and advanced kinematics. His primary research areas include telesurgery, robotic-assisted medical interventions, and the control of hyper-redundant robotic systems. Choi’s most impactful contribution is his landmark 2018 review, “Telesurgery: Past, Present, and Future,” which has garnered over 200 citations and serves as a foundational reference for the field. In this work, he comprehensively analyzes how wireless networking and robotic technology can overcome geographical barriers and address the global shortage of surgeons, enabling timely, high-quality surgical care across distances. Earlier in his career, Choi explored the frontiers of robot design with his 1993 study on the kinematics of an infinitely flexible robot arm—a “tentacle-like” system with numerous degrees of freedom. Though less cited, this work laid conceptual groundwork for continuum robots now used in minimally invasive surgery.
