Paul Fockens is a pioneering figure in advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy, with his research fundamentally shaping the fields of natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) and robotic-assisted endoscopy. As a key leader in the Euro-NOTES working group, Fockens helped establish the scientific and clinical framework for NOTES, a revolutionary technique that allows scarless abdominal surgery through natural orifices. His landmark 2011 report on the Euro-NOTES meeting (43 citations) synthesized international consensus on the state of the practice, setting the agenda for a decade of development in minimally invasive surgery. Fockens has also been at the forefront of improving endoscopic control and precision.
