About

Niall Hughes is a leading clinical researcher in stroke rehabilitation, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of robot-assisted therapy for upper limb recovery. His primary research areas focus on the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of robotic training versus enhanced therapy programmes for patients with moderate to severe arm impairment after stroke. Hughes is best known as the chief investigator of the landmark RATULS (Robot Assisted Training for the Upper Limb after Stroke) trial, the largest multicentre randomised controlled trial of its kind, published in 2019 with 477 citations.
