About
Michele Proh is a leading head and neck surgeon whose work has redefined the boundaries of transoral robotic surgery (TORS). His primary research focuses on minimally invasive surgical techniques for treating cancers and complex pathologies of the upper aerodigestive tract, including the supraglottis and parapharyngeal space. Proh’s major contributions include pioneering comparative studies that established TORS as a viable, less morbid alternative to traditional approaches. His landmark pilot study comparing TORS to transoral laser microsurgery for supraglottic cancer (80 citations) provided critical early evidence for the robotic technique’s safety and efficacy. He further expanded the field by demonstrating the feasibility of TORS for removing rare, deep-seated retrostyloid parapharyngeal space schwannomas (36 citations), a procedure traditionally requiring extensive external incisions. More recently, his systematic review and meta-analysis (2025) has extended the application of TORS to submandibular stone removal, showcasing his ongoing drive to innovate. With a career defined by pushing the envelope of what is possible through the mouth, Proh’s work has directly improved patient outcomes by reducing recovery times and surgical trauma, solidifying his reputation as a pioneer in robotic head and neck surgery.
