About
Luca Calabrese is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose research focuses on advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques for complex tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract. His major contributions lie in comparing and refining transoral approaches, particularly for supraglottic and parapharyngeal space cancers. In a landmark pilot study (2013, 80 citations), Calabrese systematically compared transoral robotic surgery (TORS) with transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) for supraglottic cancer resection, providing crucial early evidence on the efficacy and safety of these emerging techniques. He further expanded the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery by demonstrating the feasibility of transitioning from traditional transmandibular approaches to transoral robotic approaches for parapharyngeal space tumors (2017, 46 citations), a notoriously challenging anatomical region. This work has helped establish TORS as a viable, less morbid alternative to open surgery, directly impacting clinical practice and patient recovery. Calabrese’s research is instrumental in guiding surgeons toward more precise, less invasive treatments, and his comparative studies remain essential references for those exploring the frontier of robotic head and neck oncology.
