About

Michael J. Roberts is a robotics researcher whose work spans rehabilitation engineering, marine autonomy, and industrial automation. His early research focused on robotic fettling—the automated removal of excess material from castings—where he pioneered the use of visual feedback and automated path acquisition to improve consistency and efficiency in manufacturing. This foundational work, published in the late 1990s and early 2000s, addressed the challenge of unpredictable burr geometries, laying groundwork for modern adaptive robotic manufacturing. Roberts is perhaps best known for his 2004 MIT master’s thesis, “A robot for gait rehabilitation,” which has accumulated 16 citations and contributed to the development of robotic systems for physical therapy.
