About

Dr. Melania Guida is a leading thoracic surgeon whose research focuses on the intersection of robotic surgery, thymic neoplasms, and myasthenia gravis (MG). Her work has fundamentally advanced the understanding of how minimally invasive techniques can be safely applied to complex patient populations. Her most cited study, a 2021 analysis of 53 thymoma patients (34 with MG), demonstrated that robotic thymectomy achieves excellent oncological and neurological outcomes, establishing a benchmark for the field. Guida has also tackled high-risk scenarios, notably investigating the efficacy of thymectomy in severe, life-threatening MG (MGFA classes IV–V), where she critically evaluated the risk-benefit ratio of surgery. Her impact is further underscored by a major 2024 national multicenter study comparing robotic and open thymectomy for thymic neoplasms in myasthenic patients, providing robust, multi-institutional evidence supporting the robotic approach. Through these contributions, Dr. Guida has not only advanced surgical technique but also improved the quality of life and survival for patients facing these challenging conditions.
