About

Marina Terlau is a researcher advancing the precision and capability of robotic incremental sheet forming (ISF), a flexible manufacturing process for complex sheet metal parts. Her work directly tackles the central challenge of robotic ISF: the inherently low stiffness and positioning uncertainty of industrial robots, which cause significant geometrical deviations in formed parts. Terlau’s major contributions include developing strategies to increase forming accuracy while simultaneously reducing the necessary forming forces, as detailed in her 2025 paper on robot-based two-point incremental forming. To enable the required in-process control, she has also pioneered an optical measurement approach using shadow imaging sensors to track tool pose with high precision, targeting uncertainties below 50 micrometers. Her research, which has already garnered early citations, is critical for making robotic ISF a viable, high-accuracy alternative to dedicated press tooling for prototyping and small-batch production. By integrating advanced sensing and process control, Terlau is helping to unlock the full potential of flexible, robot-driven manufacturing.
