About
Maja J Matarić is a pioneering force in robotics, best known for her foundational work in socially assistive robotics (SAR). Her research focuses on developing intelligent robots that can interact with and aid people, particularly in healthcare and education settings. A landmark contribution is her long-term, in-home study using a socially assistive robot to support children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), demonstrating that robots can effectively supplement therapy beyond controlled lab environments. This work, published in 2019, has garnered 23 citations and highlights her commitment to real-world impact. Matarić has also made significant strides in human-robot interaction, robot learning from demonstration, and multi-agent coordination. With over 300 publications and more than 20,000 citations, she is one of the most influential roboticists of her generation. A recipient of the prestigious ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award and an IEEE Fellow, Matarić’s work bridges engineering and social science, shaping how robots can become compassionate companions in daily life.
