About
M. Chadid is a pioneering astronomer whose research focuses on stellar oscillations, pulsations, and the evolutionary properties of stars, with a particular emphasis on exploiting the unique observational conditions of Antarctica. Her major contributions include the development and implementation of the PAIX (Photomete) instrument, the first Antarctic polar mission photometer. This innovative device opened a new window on southern stars by enabling long, uninterrupted, and continuous precision observations over 150 days from the ground, free from the regular interruptions imposed by Earth’s rotation. Chadid’s work has significantly advanced the study of stellar pulsations and evolution. In a landmark 2019 study, she reported the first-ever multiband atmospheric extinction measurements in Antarctica, deriving extinction coefficients from 17,500 CCD stellar frames using simultaneous multicolour Johnson–Cousin filters over an entire polar winter. Her invited paper on PAIX (2016) and earlier work on optical turbulence profiling with the single star SCIDAR technique (2013) have each garnered several citations, establishing her as a key figure in polar astrophysics and high-precision stellar photometry.
