About

Karim Agabi is a pioneering figure in Antarctic astronomy, specializing in the development of robotic telescopes and high-precision photometric instrumentation for extreme environments. His work has been instrumental in demonstrating that the harsh conditions of Dome C, Antarctica, can be harnessed for world-class, long-duration stellar observations—a feat impossible from most ground-based sites. Agabi’s most cited work, “Telescope and instrument robotization at Dome C” (2007, 16 citations), emerged from a landmark brainstorming meeting in Tenerife and provides a foundational review of the challenges and solutions for automating night-time operations at Concordia Station. This paper has shaped subsequent polar observatory designs. He further advanced the field with his leadership on the PAIX project (“Opening a new window on the southern stars for less money,” 2016), which introduced the first Antarctic polar mission photometer.
