About

Louis Friedman is a pioneering space exploration scientist and advocate whose career has been defined by bold thinking about humanity's future in the solar system. Best known for his landmark work on asteroid retrieval, Friedman co-led the influential Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) feasibility studies in 2012 that examined the robotic capture and return of an entire Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) to Earth's vicinity — research that collectively garnered nearly 200 citations and helped shape NASA's Asteroid Redirect Mission. These studies demonstrated that such missions were technically achievable within a decade and could directly support human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit. Friedman's research interests span a remarkable breadth, from asteroid redirection and its synergies with crewed spaceflight, to solar sail propulsion systems enabling fast-transit smallsats in the outer solar system. He has also contributed to planetary instrumentation, including early development of audio microphone technology for the Martian surface. His more recent work explores exploration telepresence and in-flight autonomous assembly of advanced science payloads, reflecting a sustained commitment to innovative mission architecture.
