About

Dr. Lizhe Wang is a leading figure in Earth observation and environmental remote sensing, whose work bridges the gap between satellite data and critical climate science. His primary research areas include atmospheric aerosol retrieval, land surface monitoring, and the development of advanced unmanned systems for natural resource surveying. Dr. Wang’s most impactful contribution is the refinement of the MODIS Dark Target algorithm, enabling the high-accuracy retrieval of total and fine mode aerosol optical depth (AODT and AODF) over land—a notoriously difficult task. This work, cited 37 times, provides essential data for understanding climate forcing and air quality. More recently, he has pioneered the LandExplorer-1, a 3-D survey and monitoring vehicle system designed for complex, hazardous terrains.
