About
Li Liang is a leading figure in malaria immunology, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of how the RTS,S vaccine—the world’s first licensed malaria vaccine—interacts with the human immune system. Her research centers on the complex interplay between vaccine-induced immunity and natural parasite exposure, with a particular focus on *Plasmodium falciparum* liver- and blood-stage dynamics. In her seminal 2014 study, cited 39 times, Liang provided serologic evidence that RTS,S vaccination is associated with decreased exposure to both liver- and blood-stage parasites, offering critical insights into why the vaccine confers only partial protection against clinical malaria. This work helped clarify the mechanisms behind vaccine efficacy and highlighted the importance of measuring antibody responses to the circumsporozoite protein. Liang’s contributions have been instrumental in guiding the optimization of malaria vaccination strategies, making her a key voice in the global effort to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality. Her research continues to inform next-generation vaccine design and field-based evaluations across endemic regions.
