About

Li‐Jiao Tian is pioneering the intersection of synthetic biology and nanomedicine, with a core focus on biohybrid systems for targeted cancer therapy. Her most notable contribution is the development of self-mineralized biohybrid robots, exemplified by the SO@FeS system, which leverages the facultative anaerobic bacterium *Shewanella oneidensis* to synergize apoptosis and ferroptosis for tumor-selective treatment. In her landmark 2025 study, Tian achieved the first direct visualization of this therapeutic synergy using cryo-soft X-ray tomography, providing unprecedented nanoscale insight into the biohybrid’s mechanism of action. This work, already garnering 11 citations, demonstrates her ability to merge cutting-edge imaging with innovative therapeutic design. Tian’s research addresses a critical challenge in oncology: achieving precise, synergistic tumor killing while minimizing off-target effects. Her biohybrid approach, which harnesses the natural tumor-homing and mineralization capabilities of bacteria, represents a paradigm shift from conventional nanoparticle-based therapies. By integrating living organisms with inorganic nanomaterials, she is advancing a new class of "living therapeutics" that could redefine cancer treatment. For students and researchers, Tian’s work exemplifies how interdisciplinary thinking—bridging microbiology, materials science, and bioimaging—can yield transformative solutions in biomedicine.
