About
Kotaro Fukui is a pioneering roboticist whose work sits at the intersection of biomechanics and speech synthesis, with a singular focus on building anthropomorphic talking robots. As the lead developer of the Waseda Talker (WT) series, Fukui’s core contribution has been the creation of mechanical vocal tracts that physically mimic human anatomy—from three-dimensional tongues and lips to vocal cords made from thermoplastic rubber with elasticity matching human tissue. His most cited work, a 2009 paper on a three-dimensional tongue with a liquid sealing mechanism for improved resonance, has garnered 20 citations and represents a breakthrough in robotic vocal resonance.
