Klaus Hellmuth is a pioneering figure in functional genomics, best known for his foundational work on the budding yeast *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. His research centers on high-throughput transcriptional profiling and the systematic analysis of open reading frames (ORFs), which has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of eukaryotic gene expression. Hellmuth’s landmark 1998 study, which transcriptionally profiled all 6,116 ORFs of *S. cerevisiae* using PCR amplification with over 12,000 custom primers, achieved a remarkable 97% success rate. By arraying these PCR products at ultra-high density for hybridization, he created one of the first comprehensive genomic tools for yeast, enabling researchers to explore gene function on a genome-wide scale.
