About
Ken Ishihara is a multidisciplinary robotics and rehabilitation researcher whose work spans medical robotics, tele-diagnosis systems, and assistive rehabilitation technology. He is perhaps best known for his pioneering contributions to tele-echography — the remote operation of ultrasound diagnostic systems — with his most cited work, "Three Dimensional Motion Mechanism of Ultrasound Probe and its Application for Tele-echography System" (2002), accumulating 88 citations and introducing a force-sensitive robotic probe mechanism designed to safely examine patients from a distance. This line of research, extended through wireless tele-echography and fast digital network implementations, addressed a pressing need for remote diagnostic access between hospitals, clinics, and homes. Ishihara also explored the imaginative frontier of intelligent microrobot drug delivery systems guided by ultrasound. Later in his career, he contributed meaningfully to rehabilitation science, co-authoring studies evaluating gait-assisting robots such as WPAL and balance exercise assist robots (BEAR) for patients with paraplegia and mobility impairments. His early work additionally touched on wall-inspection robotics.
