About
Kara McDermott is a leading urologic oncologist whose research focuses on refining surgical approaches for kidney cancer, particularly through the development of novel classification systems for robotic partial nephrectomy. Her most impactful work includes the creation of the RPN (Radius, Position of tumour, iNvasion of renal sinus) Classification and Nephrometry Scoring System, an internationally developed clinical tool designed to preoperatively assess surgical difficulty for renal masses undergoing robotic partial nephrectomy. This contribution addresses a critical gap in existing nephrometry scores, which were not tailored to the robotic approach, thereby enhancing surgical planning and patient outcomes. With her 2023 paper on this system already garnering 11 citations, McDermott’s work is rapidly gaining recognition for its practical utility in urologic oncology. Her research underscores a commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered surgical innovation, making her a notable figure in the advancement of minimally invasive kidney cancer treatment.
