Dr. Charles Metcalfe is a pioneering urologic oncologist and robotic surgeon whose work has redefined the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery for complex renal cancers. His primary research focuses on advanced robotic techniques for inferior vena cava (IVC) tumor thrombectomy, particularly for Level III thrombi—a procedure traditionally requiring open surgery. In his landmark 2015 paper (142 citations), Metcalfe reported the first completely intracorporeal robotic Level III IVC thrombectomy, demonstrating that even the most challenging vascular oncology cases could be performed robotically.
