About

Judith J. Hoelzemann is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research centers on aerosol remote sensing, biomass burning emissions, and the characterization of atmospheric aerosols in South America. Her work is pivotal in understanding how natural and anthropogenic aerosols impact regional climate and air quality. Her most influential contribution is a 2009 study (71 citations) that established the regional representativity of AERONET observation sites during the South American biomass burning season by correlating ground-based Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) with MODIS satellite data. This work provided a critical validation framework for satellite aerosol products. More recently, she led a comprehensive 12-year analysis (2019, 20 citations) that, for the first time, characterized aerosol optical properties over Northeast Brazil using an integrated approach combining MODIS, CALIOP/CALIPSO, AERONET, and ground-based lidar data. This study significantly advanced the understanding of aerosol sources and transport in a previously understudied region.
