About

Joo Heung Kim is a pioneering breast surgical oncologist whose research has fundamentally shaped the emerging field of robot-assisted and minimally invasive mastectomy techniques. Based in South Korea, Kim has dedicated his career to advancing nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) through robotic and endoscopic approaches, working to improve both oncological safety and cosmetic outcomes for breast cancer patients. Kim's landmark 2020 paper on robot-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, now cited 68 times, established critical early evidence for the feasibility and safety of this technically demanding procedure. His 2018 case report introducing gasless robotic NSM, with 36 citations, helped lay conceptual groundwork for a rapidly evolving surgical paradigm. Through his leadership in the Korea Robot-Endoscopy Minimal Access Breast Surgery Study Group (KoREa-BSG), Kim has spearheaded large-scale prospective research, including the influential MARRES cohort study, advancing the field beyond single-institution experiences. His comparative work examining minimal access versus conventional NSM outcomes, already accumulating 32 citations since 2024, reflects his commitment to rigorous evidence generation. Collectively, Kim's body of work has earned over 170 citations, firmly establishing him as a leading international voice in the standardization and expansion of robotic breast surgery.
