About

Jong-Sung Yu is a leading figure in the design of advanced electrocatalysts and nanostructured carbon materials for energy conversion technologies. His research centers on developing high-performance anode catalysts for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), with a particular focus on multi-component platinum-based alloys. Yu’s major contributions include the discovery of highly efficient quaternary electrocatalyst systems, such as Pt–Ru–Co–W and PtRuIrNi, which demonstrate superior catalytic activity and stability for methanol electrooxidation. Notably, his 2009 work employed a robotic dispenser and combinatorial optical screening method to systematically explore the PtRuCoW alloy system, identifying compositions that outperform traditional binary catalysts. His 2013 study further advanced the field by integrating these quaternary catalysts with hierarchical nanostructured carbon supports, enhancing both performance and durability.
