Jonathan Irwin is an astronomer at the forefront of exoplanet discovery, specializing in the detection of transiting super-Earths around low-mass stars. As a key figure behind the MEarth project, he pioneered a ground-based survey targeting nearby M dwarfs—stars so small and dim that a habitable-zone super-Earth as small as two Earth radii produces a detectable 0.5% photometric dip every two weeks.
