About
Jon Telling is a biogeochemist and astrobiologist whose research explores the limits of life in Earth’s deep subsurface and what these extreme environments can teach us about the potential for life beyond our planet. His work focuses on how microorganisms survive and interact with rocks and fluids in deep terrestrial and marine settings, with a particular emphasis on hydrogen-driven microbial ecosystems and the production of biosignatures. Telling is perhaps best known for his leadership in the MINAR (Mine Analogue Research) programme, which uses the Boulby Mine in the UK—one of the deepest mines in Europe—as a planetary analogue for Mars and icy moons. His highly cited paper, "Subsurface scientific exploration of extraterrestrial environments (MINAR 5): analogue science, technology and education in the Boulby Mine, UK" (2018, 25 citations), exemplifies his integrative approach, combining field science, technology testing, and public engagement. Through this work, Telling has helped establish Boulby as a world-class facility for astrobiology and planetary exploration research, bridging the gap between Earth’s deep biosphere and the search for life elsewhere.
