Jiong Lin is reshaping the future of human-robot interaction by bridging the critical gap in nonverbal communication. His research centers on enabling humanoid robots to achieve expressive, lifelike facial movements—an area where robotic capabilities have lagged far behind advances in verbal AI. Lin’s most influential work, "Human-robot facial coexpression" (2024, 38 citations), tackles the dual challenge of actuating physical facial features and generating contextually appropriate expressions, leveraging large language models to coordinate voice with facial movement. He has since pioneered methods for teaching robots to build self-simulations of their own morphology (2025) and, most recently, developed techniques for learning realistic lip motions that achieve precise lip-audio synchronization (2026).
